"To make the hands white and delicate" (1882)

To make the hands white and very delicate, the person is assisted by washing them several times, for two or three days, in milk and water, and, upon retiring to rest, bathing them in palm oil, and putting on a pair of woolen gloves, cleaning with warm water and soap the next morning. They should be thoroughly rubbed to promote circulation, and a pair of soft leather gloves should be worn during the day."

I doubt this would change the color of your skin, but it would certainly assist in preventing chapped hands! Very important as we head into winter. You could substitute nearly any kind of oil for palm oil; olive oil is easy to come by and relatively cheap.
